i'm 39 weeks pregnant .. 1.5 cm dilated .. My stomach keeps getting hard.... "uterus is hardening" aka contractions.... Not much pain though as labor contractions are described to have.. what exactly does this mean? Is my labor very close by or is this false hope?

Every woman is different. We all experience labor in our own ways. I seriously doubt this is False Hope though. My best advice is to just relax. Your mind can "play tricks on you" if you get too stressed out. Get a pen and paper and just start recording how far apart the contractions are. If they are getting closer together and still not painful, it is always a good idea to go ahead and call you doctor/midwife. Sometimes these dull painless contractions can last for about a week. Hang in there, you're almost there.

Until your contractions are atleast sixty seconds long and three to five minutes apart for one hour, you're not in "active labor." Right now you're in the early phase or first stage of labor. Just stay relaxed, try to walk around and use gravity to bring your baby further down. Get some sleep tonight if you can, and when you notice the contractions getting more intense and consistent, then give your doctor a call and head to the hospital.

you might want to check with your doctor. The beginning is not that painful. It doesnt get extremely painful until later. I could barley feel mine most of the day with my last son and with my 2nd baby they induced me and I was having contractions off the charts and wasnt feeling a single thing. Everyone was surprised, but I didnt feel anything at all until an hour before I had to start pushing, then it got horrible. Check just to be on the safe side. All they will do is send you home if its nothing.

Sounds like Braxton Hicks.....they are contractions but it leads nowhere. It doesn't help you to dilate. Only the contractions that hurt are the ones that you want. I had Braxton Hicks for weeks before my labor actually started.

Good luck & best wishes :)

You're in Stage One: Phase One labour. This can go on for days/weeks. Most people are 3cm dialated they start realising they're in labour. Just thank God you aren't in pain... It seems a lot longer if you are.
