It's a poison. It basically acts as a neuro-inhibitor and causes paralysis in muscles. In large enough doses it kills by stopping metabolic processes requiring muscular action. It can be used in small doses for certain medical procedures.

paralysis.. in controlled amounts is sometimes used to bring on muscle relaxation during abdominal surgery and medically induced comas where flailing about and involuntary movements can hinder recovery.
