Fender Squier is the best beginner brand. It comes from a well known and reliable company and supplys high quality instruments. Squier basically sells the 'standard' Fender instruments for a lower price (and of course the materials wouldn't be of that higher standard). A standard Fender Squier Stratocaster would cost around $129.99USD (http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/guitar/navigation?q=squier&x=0&y=0). You could also get a Gibson Les Paul Jr. which is I think basically a Gibson Les Paul except it's smaller, for $99.99

You'll need a guitar first. I would highly recommend an Ibanez. They're cheap - probably in the 150 - 200 dollar price range.

For an amp, you can probably get something that's not complete crap, but still within a low budget for 75 - 100 dollars (I would suggest a 15 watt amp for starters).

Then, all you really need is a patch cable for the guitar and a new pack of strings, which would hit the price range of 15 - 20 dollars.

Good luck on you guitar playing :)

PS: I would highly recommend Ernie Ball Power Slinky guitar strings (which cost probably 5 bucks). The sound is extremely amazing for such a low price :)

Go with someone who knows.

Make sure it stays in tune. It doesn't matter what it is so long as it stays in tune.

Fender Strats are notorious for going out of tune, I have 3... it took a lot of work and customization to make them good guitars. Cheap ones are even worse.

Any guitar you buy off the rack is junk. You need to set it up properly or pay someone to set it up for you.

I would recommend some kind of Telecaster copy. Strats have a tremolo, which seems cool, but when you bend, it'll knock all the other strings out of tune, and it's just more trouble than it's worth until you know how to play.

Simple.

Fixed bridge, doesn't shock you, stays in tune. Hopefully in a color that doesn't irritate you too much. Les Paul/SG/Telecaster...

Go fixed bridge, don't listen to amateurs.

Fender is always good. if you are on a Buget, I would go to a Pawn shop and look there for a Guitar and an amp.

Fender Squier is Fender's bargain model, around that price. But...you get what you pay for.

Pawn shops...never buy anything electrical from a pawn shop.
