Electrons have a negative charge and are held in the atom by the positively charged nucleus. The further away from the nucleus that the electrons are, the easier it is to remove the electron.

Indeed, as all above answers state, the further away (larger radius) the more difficult the hold the positive nucleus hold on those negative electrons.

What no one has mentioned is that the smaller the radius the stronger the hold on the electrons. (Probably assumed that huh).

chem man knows - the reason is electron is negative charge - it is farther from the positive center of the atom
