Sodium does not exist simply as a metal in nature - it's too reactive, so it is found as a compound. Sodium is the sixth most abundant element in the earth's crust at about 2.6 - 3.0%. The most common mineral is rock salt (sodium chloride, NaCl, or halite), but it occurs in many other minerals including sodium borate (borax), sodium carbonate (soda), sodium nitrate (Chile saltpetre). and sodium sulphate (thenardite).

It has to do with electron structure. Electron structures that have filled energy levels are extremely stable. The sodium atom has an unstable electron structure: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1. The sodium ion (formed by the sodium atom losing 1 electron) has the electron structure: 1s2 2s2 2p6 and is very stable. Since sodium atoms are not stable, they will react with other things (like oxygen and water) to become sodium ions. Sodium ions are found in many compounds in nature (like salt - sodium chloride).

Sodium Chloride is Salt, and since 2/3 of the planet is covered in salt water, it is one of the most abundant of solid matter.

elemental sodium is never found in nature - too reactive (explodes with water).

sodium ion has several millions tons disssolved in sea water

first in table salt. Most basic material such,as caustic soda and acids. mother nature mixes acids and basic to produce many salts in the ocean.
