LCD is the Least common denominator.
There are a lot of ways teachers solve this problem but the most common is using factorization.

example: find the LCD of 1/8 and 5/14?
The denominators are 8 and 14.
Factor the 2 numbers into its prime factors:
8 = 2*2*2
14 = 2*7 (notice how i wrote the factors of 14.
make sure common factors are aligned.)
LCD = 2*2*2*7
= 56

Note: If the denominators are relatively prime (meaning there are no common factors) all you have to do is multiply them. example 5 and 8 are realtively prime, thus the LCD of 5 and 8 is 5*8 = 40.
