It is really dependent upon his rank and how long he is in. If he is an officer, his take home pay is more than the average enlisted officer. However, there are different allowances out there as a part of the military pay and his benefits. These include housing allowance (if he lives off base), hazard pay if deployed in a war zone, and depends on the particular region where he is stationed. It also depends if the serviceman is active duty or in the reserves. The pay rate ranges from $1178 for the lowest airman with less than two years of service to $5394 for a top ranked enlisted man with 26 years experience (not a warrant officer)

Depends upon Time & grade. Lower ranking enlisted don't make alot even with cost of living allowances. If they live on base usually in (substandard housing) they get less but they don't pay rent or utilities. Many of the E-5 and belows qualify for government assistance such as the WIC program and some even qualify for food stamps. Given the fact that the military pays for education and training the trade off is that their pay sucks bad. The medical isn't all that great either.
