I think if you breathe out of your nose your side doesn't hurt as much, or as fast.

Sideaches can be caused by a number of things, but I've found for most runners it's one of two things - either hydration issues or exertion issues.

Hydration - if you're not well hydrated when you're running, you'll often get sideaches or cramps. And slamming a powerade just before going won't help - it's whether you've been hydrating well over the 12-24 hours before the run!

Exertion - if you're running too fast that your body cannot process enough of your lactic acid your muscles are generating, you can also get cramps or sideaches. Try backing off your pace slightly, more 'jogging' than running to see if that helps as your body gets accustomed to running.

More than anything when starting to run, just take it easy at a measured pace - don't get too out of breath (maintain a conversational pace... meaning you can talk the whole time you are running, but not enough breath to sing) Or if you're really into gear, get a heart rate monitor and try to run at about 60-75% of 220-your age.

One last distance tip - never increase your mileage for a run more than 10% from your longest run prior to that in the past 3 weeks - helps avoid overexertion injuries!

More than anything, just try to stay consistent and do it frequently, and as your bod gets used to it, it will get much easier!!

This is called oxygen debt- it means you aren,t getting enough oxygen to power your legs, and all the rest of you at the same time. It's natural, and harmless. As you get in better condition, it will not happen as often. You can cure it by breathing very deep & very slow, as you run. Also, don't eat before you run!
