How early you can hear the baby's heartbeat is dependent on many variables. We expect to be able to hear the baby with an amplified doppler by about 12 weeks of gestation -- BUT there are many variables to be taken into consideration. One of the reasons that we may not be able to hear the baby at that point is the position of the uterus or the position of the baby in the uterus. Another reason is that many mothers have an additional layer of fat just above the pubic bone. This is the area we listen through when we are looking for a very small baby at around 12 weeks. Sometimes it can be difficult to locate the baby or hear it when you are listening through a little extra padding. If there is any question about the well-being of the baby, we usually do a quick ultrasound in our office to reassure us and the mother that the baby is okay. That way we can actually see the heart beating, and we don't worry about hearing it until the next visit. Good luck :)

No, you cannot hear the heartbeat by using a doppler at 5 weeks. If they even try to find the heartbeat with a doppler then something is wrong with that doc because they do not know what they are doing.
You can hear it if they do an ultrasound but doppler will not pick it up until at least 3 months along.

At 5 weeks they might not even be able to see the baby on ultra sound. I had mine at 5 1/2 weeks and they could only see the sac. The doppler can only be used after the 11th week, and with me I was 14 weeks before they heard the heartbeat with the doppler.

I had my first ultrasound at 7 weeks 3 days they tried to hear the heartbeat with the doppler and it was able to be heard, they did an ultrasound and couldn't find the baby so they did an internal ultrasound and found the baby and heartbeat.

the heart doesn't even develop until the sixth week and they can't even pick it up on a sonogram until the sixth or seventh week. You can't hear the heartbeat on a doppler till around 12 weeks. They usually don't even check for it until you have reached 12 weeks. At 5 weeks your baby is a small like sack of sells in a yolk sac.

That is waaaay too early to hear the heartbeat even with a Calibrated doppler in a doctors office. I think at about 12 weeks I heard my childrens heartbeat for the first time.
