What are you trying to tell them? Are you breaking up? If they have low self-esteem, it will probably be worse for them then someone without it.

Is this a joke? You are going to tell someone they have low self esteem, as if they didn't know? Telling someone that will just make their self-esteem plummet more.

Compliment them on things you notice are really nice on them and their self esteem will get better.

The only thing you can do to help w/o hurting them is by helping to build up their confidence complimenting them on how they look just saying positive things. If they see that the one person they care about makes them feel goo about themselves they will do anything to make themselves look and feel better.

Depends on how you are trying to deal with them?
Are you...breaking up with them? Telling them they hurt your feelings...
different situations call for a different set of words.
