I ask this because my sister had a bunch of fish in her tank with her husbands snail and now all of her fish (that were very healthy when she bought them) are dead, all except for the snail and her babies.

Typically no... but I've heard of it happening. Check out www.applesnail.net It's a cool site with lots of snail pro's on there... the discussion forum is great for questions like this. I've read a few people who said their snails managed to catch their fish and munch on them... but typically they'll live in harmony. If you found the fish dead and uneaten... I'd have to guess your snail brought in some sort of germ or parasite that harmed your fish. Snails are typically more sensitive than fish to water quality... so if it was just the water, I think the snail would have gone first. Either way... test the water. Fish and snails often need different things. Make sure the types of fish you have are able to live in the same type of environment (alkalinity, pH, etc) as your snail.

They could have definitely brought in diseases. If you want to get rid of the snails you should get a Clown loach. If you have a tank that is anything smaller than 20 gallons then you should get a Striata Botia Loach. They both love snails and will clean up your tank of snails really fast because if not snails multiply fast and sometimes cant be spotted but will cause problems.

I artwork at a puppy save and we get outbreaks often times.. heres what we do. We get the Malaysian trumpet snail... they're the worst and reproduce instantly by themselves.. We trick them into boxes that we use to promote our bettas and flora in. they're strong plastics cups with a quarter length hollow contained in the lid... fill it with 2 white vacation feeders and four-6 bottom feeder pills... placed it on the bottom of the tank for an afternoon or 2.. a good number of those little pests will fill the cup. this may take out an total technology of older ones. reducing the inhabitants sufficient to enable the subsequent step artwork. Then next step is my prominent.. upload some assassin snails.. they'll eat something else :) get about 5 minimum for a 10 gallon tank. they don't reproduce as quickly and favor a mated pair to take action. they could stay on your tank after. they're quite snails and cover in the course of the day. additionally they don't complication snails that are larger then them like secret snails.

Snails can carry other diseases with them from wherever you purchased them. The largest problem with snails is they are asexual and repopulate very fast. Before you know it your whole tank will be over run by snails.

actually, large fish could eat the snails so if the snails could have something, then that could be reason they died.
