(This is for a baby that my mom is babysitting. It's not my baby. That's for all of my friends who know my age and my responsiblity level.)

From 4-6 months of age, your baby may be ready to eat from a spoon. Look out for these signs:

Baby is now able to hold his or her head up well. Vision is far more accurate and his eyes can follow a suspended toy swinging from side to side and up and down.

The extrusion reflex disappears - baby's tongue now moves back and forth to take food from a spoon for swallowing. By six months most babies can use the tongue to move semi-solid food from the front of the mouth to the back ready for swallowing. If your baby still has the extrusion reflex, they are not yet ready for spoon feeding.

The sucking reflex becomes voluntary. Babies can sometimes approximate their lips to the rim of a cup by five months.

Holds rattle for an extended period of time
Laughs out loud
Sits supported for short periods of time
Recognizes bottle and familiar faces

BIRTH TO SIX MONTHS
- They begin to develop trust as their parents and providers meet their needs (for example, feeding them when they are hungry, changing their diapers when needed, or holding them when they cry).

- When frightened, infants cry and look surprised and afraid. They cry to express hunger, anger, and pain. It is their way of communicating.

- They are easily excited or upset.

- They need to be cradled and comforted.

- It seems as if they cannot tell where their bodies end and someone else's begins.

- Infants smile in response to a pleasant sound or a full stomach. At about 6 weeks, they smile in response to someone else. By 4 months, they smile broadly and laugh when pleased.

- They learn to recognize faces and voices of parents and providers.

All baby's mature at different rates. I have a baby boy who started holding his head well while laying on his stomach at around 4 months but a friend has a baby girl that did it at 3 months. They are all different.

My sons could all hold ther heads up at around three months. I don't know when they are supposed to I know that they were sitting before six months. so I would say he should be working on sitting up. But babies do progress differently. It has been my experience that the more interaction a baby has the faster he learns things.
