All indications are that it's an instinctual behavior, not learned. Although there is evidence in a few studies that show they *do* learn to make better webs, and adapt to more difficult places to spin them, the more they make.

How Do Spiders Spin Webs

2016-10-28 14:27:16 · answer #2 · answered by hanrahan 4 · 0 0

Spiders do not learn to spin a web for the simple reason that they have nobody to learn from. Unlike many vertebrate species, where young animals observe their parents or other adult animals perform a particular action (i.e. lion cubs watching adults hunt or young chimpanzees watching adults dig for termites), spiders are on their own from the day they hatch. Most spiders spin their first webs without having ever observed the behavior in another animal - it just comes naturally to them, like breathing. Parenthetically, it is doubtful that a spider could learn a complex behavior given the simplicity of the ganglia that pass for its brain.

They are born with the ability. Orb-weaving spiders are not good mommies. Young orb-weavers are on their own.

They get both better at webmaking with age, but not due to a gain in skill. It's only because the larger spider makes a larger web, which is able to bring in larger prey.

They attend 9 mos. of elementary education then are thrown into a hardcore 24 hrs. a day 7 day week of secondary education for another 6 mos. Then they can finally spin a web only after recieving a certificate through the mail otherwise they may face prison time.
