What's the best way to protect a softwood floor?

I've heard with a good finish you can prevent dents. Is there a particular finish that can help more than others?

I don't know what kind of softwood, just that it is softwood.

You would be better off putting protective pads under your table and chair legs. Just a finish on the wood is unlikely to resist a denting force.

Area rugs. No finish will stop dents.
