First off, you need 1 stick, and one flattened piece of wood with a slight groove in it. Both should be about 12 to 18 inches long. The type of wood doesnt really matter. Inside the groove what you will do is this, place some kindling at the far end of the groove, kindling can be pine needles, dry brush, dry grass, newspaper, etc. It just has to be light and airy, nothing thick. Then you rub the stick in the groove towards the kindling, do this repeatedly until the friction from the rubbing back and forth motion makes the kindling start up. When this happens, blow lightly on the kindling until a small flame is started. Now that it is lit, add more kindling, but not so much you smother the flame out, then small sticks, twigs, etc... and finally, once you have enough of an established flame, you can add larger sticks and logs, etc...

You are supposed to rub them together so fast that they get hot and drop sparks off into some kindling like leaves and bark. The only way to do that is to put a point of a vertical one into a hole in a horizontal other one and use a pull string to spin the vertical one very fast so that the point of contact starts to glow. That is tough to do.

If you think you are going to need a fire starter you would be better off to bring some waterproof matches along with you. On Discovery channel this weekend they showed that kindling is obsolete and you can use shavings from a magnesium block to catch better than kindling (and of course you need to bring that along too.)
