The definition
Biological evolution, simply put, is descent with modification. This definition encompasses small-scale evolution (changes in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next) and large-scale evolution (the descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations). Evolution helps us to understand the history of life.

The explanation
Biological evolution is not simply a matter of change over time. Lots of things change over time: trees lose their leaves, mountain ranges rise and erode, but they aren't examples of biological evolution because they don't involve descent through genetic inheritance.

The central idea of biological evolution is that all life on Earth shares a common ancestor, just as you and your cousins share a common grandmother.

Through the process of descent with modification, the common ancestor of life on Earth gave rise to the fantastic diversity that we see documented in the fossil record and around us today. Evolution means that we're all distant cousins: humans and oak trees, hummingbirds and whales.

The process of evolution produces a pattern of relationships between species. As lineages evolve and split and modifications are inherited, their evolutionary paths diverge. This produces a branching pattern of evolutionary relationships.

By studying inherited species' characteristics and other historical evidence, we can reconstruct evolutionary relationships and represent them on a "family tree," called a phylogeny.

Below is a link of a walk-thru of how to understand evolution. It has illustrations to help, too.

Evolution is the theory of how organisms adapt to environmental pressures through Natural Selection as proposed by Charles Darwin, Lyell, and others. The theory states that over millions of years organisms with the best genetic profile will survive and prosper.

Evolution comes in many forms. At its root, it simply means change over time usually resulting in improvements to the item being changed.

In biology it is a religion founded by Charles Darwin. Adherents believe that all life came into being from non-living matter and gradually changed over millions of years, dividing into all the species of plants and animals we see today. It is a religion because there are zero scientific facts that support it.

Put simply evolution is just change that takes place over time that better adapts a species for conditions.

1)A gradual process in which something changes into a different & usually more complex or better form.
2)gradual development e.g development of species from earlier forms, as an explanation of their origins.

evolution is the change over time. people/animals adjust to the surroundings

a good example is bottle neck theory:imagine a disease that killed all retarded people (if only this example was true) when that happen, all retards will die, and life will move on, within a few thousand years, we look at ourself and see that there are no more retards. what that means is the one most fit for survival will live to represent the next generation

Evolution is the process of life diverging and changing to better survive in the environment. It based on mutations and survival of the fittest. It is how life as we know it came to be, and is an ongoing process.
