I drive an MY99 Subaru Impreza turbo 2000 with full decat and usually run with Tescos super unleaded (99ron)I put my first tank full of the new Shell V-Power in a couple of days ago and the car seems to run a lot smoother where as Sainsburys super seems to do the opposite.
What car do you drive? and do you notice the difference? or is it just psychological?

I know higher octane levels make a difference but Tescos and V-Power are both 99ron so its just down to the additives....can they really make much of a difference?

Watcha :)

No, it isn;t just psychological, if you have a turbo it will benefit from a higher than typical octane fuel.

Tescos 99 gets some of the increased octane by adding a small amount of ethanol - which WILL make the car run VERY slightly leaner - so you can sometimes get a little extra power out - as well as not having the engine retard your ignition because of low octane.

I drive a Toyota Supra turbo fitted with nitrous oxide, when I am playing around on-track I tend to use a much higer octane fuel (petrol with added toluene and a very small amount of acetone) and the difference is amazing. Zero knock so the ECU lets the ignition advance way more than it would on 97 / 99.

It puzzles me though when you see lads put 250ml of octane booster from Halfrauds into 10 gallons on 97 - and then reckon they are getting more performance. Self delusion at £5.99 for 250ml. Ouch

Big name brands are usually safest. A lot of smaller companies buy their gas from different sources and you don't know what you're getting. My vehicle always seems to run better with Shell of Exxon that it does with Lukoil or Citgo.

Try jet fuel. Seriously. It's pricey but will double your engine's output.

It is psychological. You only need premium if your motor recommends it.
