Martial, from Roman god of war Mars. Mars is actually taken, along with many Roman gods from the Greek god of War Ares. When Greece fell to the conquests of Rome, the Romans appropriated many of their gods, renamed them, and made them their own. As you may have noticed, Mars is also the name of one the planets in our solar system. Several others are so named: Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, all are Roman gods. Some moons are even named after Roman gods or demi-gods, such as Titan, one of Jupiter's moon.
