Keepsake Ultrasounds
Today there are centers that use ultrasound to produce 3D videos and portraits of a fetus. These "keepsake" videos show facial features, fingers, toes, the baby's sex, and movement.
Many parents enjoy having these moving portraits. However, not much is known about the effects of repeated exposure to ultrasound. It seems to be safe, but it is possible that problems could be found in the future.

Moreover, the workers at these centers often are not trained to interpret the images for you. Based on the ultrasound, you may be falsely reassured that your baby is doing well, when in fact there may be a problem. Or, you may be alarmed that the image shows an abnormality and, because these centers are not medical facilities, you will be left without any professional help. Obstetric ultrasound is best obtained through standard prenatal care.

In my opinion , if you still want a 3D us, make sure the tech is certified by the ARMDS and has the RDMS credentials after her name, and scan for no more than 10 minutes.

Your MD doesn't HAVE to know unless the center requests permission.

Most ultrasounds are routinely performed using conventional 2 dimensional (2D) scanning. In recent years, 3 dimensional (3D) and 4 dimensional (4D) ultrasounds have become increasingly popular and readily available. With 3D ultrasound, a series of thin 2D slices is digitally reconstructed to give more life-like images. With 4D ultrasound, the added dimension is time, so that the 3D images appear to be moving in real time. It totally safe, you can go with this option if you want too.

I just had mine done at 34 weeks... and it was AMAZING!!! Its totally safe, my doctors office is where i had mine done. if you want to tell your doctor you can... also if you see anything that concerns you i would... but generally they tell you to do them between 28-34 weeks. Remember that the closer to your due date the more Infant like your images will be.
