The bursa, fluid filled sacs that lubricate the joints, breaks and eventually you will lose this protection. As you age, arthritis will settle into these joints and it won't be fun.

I'm not for sure, but I've been cracking mine since childhood. statements like your knuckles are gonna get big, I didn't notice that until I took some pictures.
Something about the air gets between the cartiledge.

im 21 nad ive been crackin them uncontrollably since i was 7...and as far as i can see..the only thing that happens is that they get a bigger, sum ppl say u get arthiritis and all that, but i spoke to a doctor that said that wasnt neccessary true..ur knuckles will become bigger however. aside from that, i know my knuckels dont feel as intense..and oh yeah, they say it isnt very lady like---whatever.by the way, i dont have arthiritis, and never had junior or kids arthiritis-(tho sumthin like that could take years to come in)..anyways, unless u dont mind havin slightly bigger knuckels, ppl shouldnt crack them-but it is a relief when ur hands are tense

Yahoo just had a story about this very thing. Nothing happens and they aren't sure what causes the noise. I had always been told that it causes arthritis, but they say it doesn't... the experts say it may just be air in between the cartilage or something.

they enlarge and your knuckles get fat.totally not attractive, and it makes it hard to play piano
