I have read about the Jersey Devil many times. It has been immortalized by the New Jersey Devils Hockey Team.

This is an enduring urban legend that could possibly have a basis in fact. It is within the realm of possibility that at one time, there really was a baby with terrible birth defects, possibly affecting the facial features, born among the settlers. These deformities could have been the common cleft palate or one of the more grotesque syndromes. To these illiterate and superstitious people, this child would certainly have been perceived as a child of the devil and most likely would have been treated with curiousity and fear, and shunned by the community.

Under these circumstances, the wonder is not that this child may have grown into a dysfunctional adult, but that it managed to reach adulthood at all.

This unhappy person could have lived in the wilderness, living off the land and avoiding the settlements, where he was likely feared and despised.

Anyone encountering this unkempt and grotesque wild man in the woods could be forgiven for thinking that he had come face to face with the devil, himself. And when they died, this man got credit for it. He most likely received credit for every other calamity that happened to these people, as well.

And if he died alone in the forest, his body would most likely not have been found. Therefore, legend states that he is still there, in the woods (or at least in the hockey arena).

On the other hand.. the devil himself may be camping out in the wilds of New Jersey.

count me in, over the last decade, name another team that combines great management without sacrificing skill, talent, or an excellent team? let's start with management and team building. say what you will about Lou, he's built the modern dynasty by doing the right things, scouting & drafting right, developing prospects in an excellent farm system, then work them into the bigs at the right time. He's also kept salaries in check, and knew which players to keep and which to let go - see Sykora, Arnott, and Elias (the big line of yore). Elias continues to shine & the other two, well... one can say that it's all because of Brodeur & a trapping team, but truth is, the team concept is really what makes them tick. Proof? Besides Elias, name 5 other forwards. betcha few can. and thanks to all this, 3 championships in 8 years. i don't care if you don't like the trap, i'd rather have the 3 cups than an entertaining team. to lidstromnumber1fan - you rock girl!
