I did the whole "online dating" thing for 4 years; there weren't a lot of places for me to meet people in "real life" - I don't like to go out, have a limited circle of friends, and work in a small office. So, online dating it was. Met some interesting people, had good and bad experiences, kinda the run of the mill dating stuff. And this was the way I met my husband: through online personals. It is a great match - he's a reclusive couch potato who works from home and doesn't like going out and partying. We would never have met if it wasn't for the internet - and I certainly am glad we did.
P.S. Some of my best friends I also met online originally - not in the "dating" context, but in a historical role-play community. Know several folks that met their significant others this way, and got married.

I met my partner through the internet 2 years ago, things are still going well. I also have made a couple of very good friends online, who have become great friends offline as well.
It's the same as anything in life, don't trust everyone. If you talk to people online for a period of time, you can generally tell if they are genuine, it is very hard to lie for a long period of time.
If you are going to meet up with someone who you speak to online, be careful. Make sure you know them, have seen some photos of them and maybe even spoken on the phone before hand, that way you know what you are letting yourself in for.
Let someone know where you are going, and tell the person you are meeting beforehand you can only meet up for a couple of hours, i.e tell them "I need to be home or somewhere else before 8pm", that way if things don't work, you don't need to make excuses. If you like them and want to stay longer, you can stay longer and have fun!

I did! Met my partner 5 years ago online and have been with him ever since, we have a great relationship.
Neither of us were "looking" but we just clicked after chatting in a general chatroom.
