It is very common to have a pregnancy itch but there is a condition called obstetric cholestasis which affects 1 in 200 pregnant women. The itching is caused by the mother's liver failing to secrete bile salts properly, which leads them to stain the blood and get into the skin and cause irritation. They also get into the bloodstream of the foetus, which is unable to tolerate them.
This condition can lead to the still birth of up to 700 babies a year. There is no drug to treat the condition. To save the foetus the mother needs to be monitored constantly and early delivery is usually recommended.

I got itchy skin too when I was pregnant - I think it's probably all to do with hormone changes!

I had that too, except that I had it on my stomach too. It is just a rash that is caused by pregnancy hormones. It is sort of like hives. I had to take steroids before I delivered because it was so itchy. It went away completely hours after delivery.

i am due on monday with my 2nd boy! and both times i got really itchy skin! right now its worse than ever!
it's caused by your skin stretching due to pregnancy. when your skin gets stretched to the max it can become very itchy and its normal. unless you have got some sort of rash or something it could be something else!

It's all down to those wonderful hormones. You think that you've met all the tricks that they can do, then along comes another. They make the skin ultrasensitive, and therefore more itchy.

I broke out in a terrible rash when I was pregnant and the doctor couldn't figure it out at all. Come to find out, it was the prenatal viatmins. In the last stages of the baby developing, they don't need the vitamins as they are just fattening for the most part. Some women, instead of passing the extra vitamins through the waste, send it out through the skin.

I was itchy too. It's the hormones and that most of your blood is trying to be pumped to your baby so your circulation is not as good.
