Hi.. I'd forget about wrapping the tail since it can easily become too tight, cut off circulation, and *poof* you've got no tail, permanently!

You mentioned 'her' tail.. is she in season? If so, she might be a bit, um, distracted during her heat, and the behaviour should go away after.

As others mentioned, bacterial or fungal infections can cause itchy tail.. I also like Micro Tek products. I found Shapley's MTG really good too.

And of course, worming is important, too. Panacur power packs are a good way to be sure they're clean of worms.

Lastly, check her teats. It's possible smegma and dirt has accumulated there and might make her itchy. You can soften the schmutz in between her teats with baby oil or KY jelly the day before you wash her. Good luck.

My gelding used to do that. The only thing you can really do is to put up a board all the way around her stall that sticks out about 5 inches and is located about 8-10 inches UNDER where the base of her tail meets the wall. That way she won't be able to get her butt in direct contact with the wall.

You also need to find out why she is rubbing. Is she wormed on a regular basis? Does she have any type of fungus on her dock?

Need to update her worming, check for any type of insect that can be embedded in her tail and check for any bites that can be causing irritation/itching.

Those are the most common things for tail rubbing.

I had a situation at my old stables where a horse rub it bleeding raw and the owner argued with me. A week later, she was put down by worm impaction. Oh, you know I made a storm about it and he finally apologized for telling me to F-off basically since I was considered a "little girl who don't nothing compared to his 30 year experience".

Sometimes it isn't who you get the advice from, but what the advice actually is that matters.

when i bought my horse she did that. we wormed her, cleaned out her teats, rubbed MTG into her tail bone, made sure her rear end was clean and washed her tailbone and tail. wrapping it might be making worse. sort of like if you get a misguito bite and you put damp cotton over it. you can't scratch and it's all you can think about. let her out in a paddock everyday and get her a lic-it or horse toy or something to keep her entertained when she is in her stall.

Her tail bone is probably dirty or she could have some skin problems. I'd use a medicated shampoo like Micro-Tek and shampoo the tail bone really well. Make sure you rinse all of the soap out. Then you can spray it with the Micro-Tek spray, it's a leave in spray, it should really help the itching.

Get her a better butt scratcher for her to use. I've seen horses do that before, I think it relieves them in some way. Maybe it's just flies and insects, or maybe she wants a mate to scratch her butt for her. Hmmm.

See a vet. Something is irritating her back side, could be worms, could be allot of things but see a proffesional to be sure.
