I don't believe there is really a time to tell a child. They'll figure it out on their own and come to you for answers when they do, if they need to be reassured. It's a little bit of fun and mystery that we all go through, no use in spoiling it. Oftentimes children will continue to pretend they believe, long after they're really on to the game, either for siblings' sake or just for their parents. After all, it's kind of fun to carry on the illusion.

i told my child when she was in grade 4. i thought it was time. kinda cruel sometimes making kids believe in these things and when they find out, they are heartbroken. why start to begin with. i just thought believing in santa in grade 4 was dumb. i still remember as a child being told santa was not real, i was devasted.

Don't worry about that - they will find our for themselves a lot sooner than you think. My kids found out when they were about 8 years old. I was, can you believe this, 12 when I found out about Santa Claus!!

I think you should just say that as long as we believe he still comes to our house. Also, as far as confusing them w/ Christian beliefs etc...I tell my kids that Santa is like the Fun clown at a Birthday party. He makes Jesus b-day fun and exciting for children. So far it has worked for me.

I don't think my parent ever told me. I just sort of figured it out around age 9 or so (give or take 2 years). That's probably best. Knowing sort of takes the joy out of things.
More than likely their friends or older cousins will tell them.

My husband and I have let our kids be kids until they asked us for the truth. Then we swore the ones who knew to secrecy.
I would think they already know that it's make believe, but if you see your kids blurring that line, it's time to tell them.

Every child is different. Just wait until they start asking about it and then let them know.

You should have never told them they existed, I never believed in either of those, I just saw them as symbols of celebration.
