If you are breast feeding you may want to consider going to formula there is a hypoallergenic formula that is great for babies with severe reflux, its not that they are really allergic to dairy or soy but that those proteins are really tough to break down. The prescription formulas neocate and ellecare are great.
My son which is 14 months old went through the whole zantac, axid thing that didn't work, he slept in his swing and car seat, we were in the hospital 15 times, woke up every 2 hours during the night, thickened his formula with rice cereal, had a ton of respiratory problems from the relux.
the prevacid is great. talk to your sons doc, if you havent took him to a gi doc, this is a great time to find one. there are drugs out there like reglan to help speed up the digestive process. unfortuanatly my son was allergic to that medication.
when they switched him to the ellecare with thickend feedings (1-2tablesppoons of rice cereal per ounce of formula) and 15mg prevacid a day he stopped the fussy spells, slept better and wwas able to get rid of the apnea monitor.
he at 5 months old was then laying flat to sleep, and acting like anormal baby. he still doesn't weigh 20lbs, and according to the nutritionist, and ped, and gi doc that is okay for a relfux baby, they willl be underweight no matter what.
email me if you need any more suggestions, or help

I am a pediatric nurse specialist...the dose of Prevacid is the appropriate dose and may be needed for several months. It is normal for babies his age to awaken every 2-3 hrs, especially if they are breast fed. The crying may be hunger or discomfort, but not necessiarily "gas pains". Many studies have shown that what we interpret as gas pains is usually normal baby behavior...most change this behavior at about 6 months of age. The Prevacid is not for gas, it is for acid reflux...which can cause a lot of discomfort. Be sure to talk to your baby's doctor about your questions. Reflux is not uncommon in infants and causes a lot of anxiety in parents. Ask your doc for some literature on it.

I'm sure you're going to a ped in order to have a prescription for this med, but I would definately suggest calling to ask him/her for more info. My dd is 10 months and has been on Prevacid for many months and before that Zantac. These meds are safe for babes -- much better than the alternative -- pain and suffering of the child, insanity of the parents, weight loss of child, possible damage to esophagus, etc. Reflux can be an awful experience. You mentioned that your babe is not allergic to milk but that he is fussy when you have it. How are you sure there's no allergy? This type of intolerance, cow's milk protein allergy, is relatively common and easily solved for its "short" duration -- get it out of the diet. I've been off all milk products and recently egg products becuase it turns out that mine has issues with them. It's been totally worth it so that my child continues to get the benefits of breast milk. She is supplemented with Alimentum, a special formula for babe's with milk allergy. Check out infantreflux.org and kellymom.com -- you'll find a wealth of resources there. I wish you all luck and patience. A reflux child is a tiring blessing :)

my 5 week old is on 15 mg of prevacid as well, as far as i'm aware i only have to give it to my son for 30 days and its supposed to help so he won't need it again. he just started it less than a week ago, so i'm not sure how good it works yet.

I think that if a Dr. put your son on the medication, than it should be fine. You could always look it up on webmd to see what they say about it. What worked best for me with my daughter was gas drops!! Oh they're a godsend!! You can buy a store brand or buy the expensive brand, they work all the same! And it has a sweet taste to it, so babies actually enjoy taking it. Good luck!

My son had reflux, and as long as your doctor prescribed that dosage then he should be OK. I was nursing my son when he was diagnosed and the pediatrician put him on Nutrimigen (made by enfamil) and it worked great. If he does get put on that formula you should still be able to nurse. Good Luck.

I'm not going to say that this is what your child's problem is...but this is what my child went through.
I was part of the 5% of women who couldn't breast feed because my milk never came in. So I had to resort to formula. We used regular Similac with Iron. I was familiar with it because it's what my nephew had and did well with.
The first three months of my son's life was terrible. He was gassy, had cramps, spit up all the time, had blackish green stool which had mucous in it, and his Pediatrician kept saying that he isn't allergic to milk that I needed to stop worrying about it. Everything was going to work out. She never ran any tests and kept brush me aside.
It was my Mom and myself that took it upon ourselves to change his formula to a lactose free formula. I tried that out for two weeks and I noticed a HUGE difference in my son. He was more alert, his stool was becoming more normal, he was keeping his formula down. I changed Pediatrician's, told his current one about what his last doctor did and didn't do and his current doctor said taking matters into my own hands was the best thing I could do for my child.
I have told people over and over and over that these doctor's don't know your baby like you do. A mother who is intune with her baby will know when something is wrong with it and know when something isn't working. If you think you aren't getting the aid you think you need for your child then change doctor's.
Best of luck to you and your baby!
