There used to be a show years ago but I'm not sure what country it was in. When the show was over the fat lady sang so people knew the show was finished. This is where the saying comes from. " It's not over till the fat lady sings " means that everything is finished. I hope this helps.

The comlete saying is "It's not over till the fat lady sings". It just means someone does not believe the situation they are talking about has been decided completely, and it is still worth trying until it has ended for sure (and the big boned lady belts a note). I think it originates from operas. . .

Female opera singers used to be fat. Now the present generation of women have great bodies and great acting skills as well as great voices.
The old German Wagnerian operas always ended up with an aria sung by a gigantic female singer. If you were not a fan of opera and not familiar with the music that last song would be a clue that your time at the opera was over.
Now the end of anything complex is "when the fat lady sings" even though the image doesn't really fit in opera anymore

It's like an Opera term. Opera female singers are usually fat and since the good ones play lead roles many times they have the final song of the play, so "It ain't over until the fat lady sings" It ain't over till it's over

It comes from opera, when it is the soprano, who is normally a very large lady, sings the finale. The full saying is "It isn't over until the fat lady sings"

Well, you don't have the entire saying, hon. The saying actually is: "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings."
Wikipedia and Google are excellent resources. Use them.
The Wikipedia article pertaining to this saying is included in my sources.

It's an opera reference where an opera singer (sometimes a fat lady) ends the opera with a solo (or aria). It basically means that "it ain't over till it's over".
