You can tell if the walls have moved apart from each other at the corners. But the best thing to do is get a contractor who builds custom homes to come out and look at the foundation. If it is cracked you need to know why. Did the land move by an earthquake? Did it slide due to water or are you on a hill with erosion? I looked at a fixer in San Clemente and it was obvious we would have to knock the house down and regrade the hillside and build a proper retaining wall before we could build a new house. Needles to say we passed on the project.

If your foundation is damaged you'll see signs like water leaking in from outside, cracks in the foundation, sagging doors, and cracks in your walls. Note that these can be caused by many other things too besides foundation problems. If you think you have problems, you should be able to find a foundation repair company in the yellow pages.

We have folks in the Big Citys that have folks that do nuthing but reinforce foundations ...they also will level your house too. The will drive steel pilins and set it right,,,and then they will break your heart and your pocket book too if they do the job....probabnly not much just to check probably be wise to check for termites too
