I will be 7 weeks pregnant on thursday, my doctor did a dating ultrasound last week and detected the heartbeat, at 101 bpm. He said that was low, but it could be because the heartbeat was detected so early. They scheduled another ultrasound for 2 weeks later. I am a little concerned as they normally don;t do so many ultrasounds in the early months as there really is no need. Honest opinions of what you think a low heartbeat may mean.

Our dates are right on, so I am as pregnant as I though I was, why do you think they want to do another ultrasound?

Well, if I remember correctly, the baby's heartrate at this stage should be somewhere around 140bpm. However, we are almost 10 weeks and aren't scheduled for our first US until Friday. The doctor said that's because it is a little hard to hear the heartbeat until that time. I would bet that he just wants to do the US again so that he can check the heartrate again, as well as make sure everything is going as it should.

At seven weeks the ultrasound is the only way they can determine the baby's heartbeat. If they could just measure with the doppler they would. Most of the time the heartbeat can't be detected, so like your doctor said, it is probably just because it is so early in the game. Don't worry too much about it, in two weeks the beat will be much stronger and probably faster, plus easier to count than the weak beat now is.

not to scare you but a baby's heartbeat is normally 120 to 160 in the womb. an ultrasound will help them determine if the heart beat is actually low or if it was too early for them to detect the actual heart beat and they can determine the actual size of the baby. but by you having the ultrasound they can rule out all possibilities and put your mind at ease. for right now don't worry about because it's not good for the baby. just relax i'm sure everything is fine because if it really wasn't they would of sent you sooner for an ultrasound. good luck and congratulations.

100 is a little low for a 7 weeker, but that doesn't mean ANYTHING, The heartbeat can vary at different resting stages. The repeat US is just a precaution. Try not to worry too much.

Read everything you can get your hands on. The best book is "What to Expect when you're Expecting". Also don't be afraid to call your doctor or nurse whenever you have a question-- that's part of their job description.
