My uncle raised pork, and my Mom tells me the story of some hog who looked into the farmer's eyes(Jesse Burkhart) and said you wouldn't kill me would you? They bred pork the old fashioned way of not artificial insemination. I don't even want to know what the hog house was like, but the booties we were required to wear and the electrical ensurance of continual air quality went on until the old farmer got tired of the hog business.
His "pork" was nearly flawless but you couldn't tell me that being downwind from the place for a short time. Tasted cheap portkfrom my husband's friends who sold him a hog. It stunk, failed to go soft with appropriate heating. what a piece of ****. Uncle rainsed pork that ended up in the finest parties and pig roasts that the East Coast could come up with. Wish I could have been there, really. I never knew the "pork" that Grandpa served was actually $300 a plate resaurant quality. Not jaded, just that after cleaning up in the barn and feeding the chickens, the thought of a high priced meal is kind of silly(I never did the cleanup, that was mom and gramps). We never appreciate the Grandparents till they are gone, and then we say how the hell did you make it out here, no electricity, botulism, the barn a haven in the storm and the orchard in bloom, and the photographers hood in the front yard. I still have the sleigh bells, Grandpa Burkhart, and I respect the Besse twin you had left back in Germany long affter the war. Many sea caprtains settled in the Byron valley and gave up the sea and joined you in feeding the world. You had balls of steel. No radar weather reports to pinpoint the storms, and no electrical service, nothing but the rail serive that brought you the carpenter who adorned the house. I still wonder if Grandma ****** the carpenter, but probably not, being English and all, worried about the botulism and the pneumonia. The woman was doing microbiology! I found a mineral kit from 1964 in the basement, the Porter Chemistry Set. They used to give kids the radioactive elements and noone knew. I kept getting headaches everytime I touched the minerals. Through it in the fireplace. If America can't survive the little discard of a tiny rock, **** em. My guess is Arsenic Headache, and Grandpa would probably have laughed. Gave his daughter, the Polio survivor who never got paralyzed though infected, a horse, a piano, and a set of sleigh bells. Put a price on that and I'll sit down and finally learn poker, Vegas! Love to give you the details cause you always rise above the stupidity and eat it up. My fellow collegians, I have no hat to take off to you. Remember, before Dekalb genetics took over and food tasted like food. We had it all and we never left the ******* barn!
Love,
Michelle

There is a long history of animals being executed for "crimes" committed as if they were by a human. I have read that an elephant was executed for murder somewhere in America in the 19th/early 20th century. A monkey was hung in the North East of England because it was thought to be a French spy and so on. Fascinating but sadly true.

Yup and the first C-Section was performed by a man whose job was to castrate pigs.
A war nearly broke out over the death of a pig between the US and Britain. The US ended up getting an island over the incident.

Sounds reasonable. Animals were executed as witches too.
