Well, it's recommended to have at least 20 gallons per goldfish. I'm gonna take a guess that you don't have a 140 gallon fish tank. I'd say your fish are dying from being overstocked in a tank that's too small(hopefully it's a tank and not a bowl). They also need very good filtration since they produce a lot of ammonia naturally. Also, at a minimum you should be doing weekly water changes of at least 20-25%, but that depends on the tank size and how overstocked the tank is-may need more then once a week. As far as the fins, that's probably the start of fin rot, usually caused by poor water conditions, which is also causing them to have swim bladder problems(swimming upside down) and laying on his side. I'd do a water change immediately, that should help for the mean time, and give some serious thought to either a larger tank, buying another tank, or giving some back to the fish store. Sorry!

You have POOR water quality. With 7 goldfish, for them to be healthy you need about a 90 gallon tank with great filtration. What size is your tank?

Do a large (40%) water change immediately. Keep doing this until your ammonia and nitrites are at 0ppm. Add some melafix (helps with bacterial infections, you sound like yours have septicemia).

See, I just got a few new fish, and I had the same problem. Maybe your fish are just stressed, or there is something going on with the fishes filter system. DO you have am ammonia filter in the tank? If not I would suggest getting one because when you have ammonia in the water it is very hard on the fish. Try putting some stress drops in the tank if you have any. Did you every try separating them?

You see what's happening is that the fish are becoming so depressed they are actually slitting their fins. That would explain the red marks. It happens commonly when goldfish are placed near a computer that is constantly displaying MySpace or Facebook. Have the fish displayed any other odd symptoms like growing long hair over their eyes, yet keeping it short in the back?
