Arc is the name of a river in the French regions of Provence and Savoie.

Joan d'Arc's family hailed from this area hence the name.

These names were common before 'surnames' got into common usage.

Arc de Triumph was built for Napoleon and has nothing to do with Joan of Arc... however, the person above is right, d'Arc is the family name

Excellent work Richard the D'Arc does indeed mean of the arc or of the bow just as Lancelot's surname DuLac means of the lake. French surnames just like other Anglican names usually refer to a trade or a location just as my surname is Medieval Scots Gaelic for a hill or slope.

Richard gets best answer good show.

Joan of Arc was born to Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle Romée in Domrémy, a village which was then in the duchy of Bar (and later annexed to the province of Lorraine and renamed Domrémy-la-Pucelle) She is one of those saints who are known by their surname. St Catherine Labore, St Vincent de Paul, etc. etc. Other saints are given a nickname -- eg. St Jean the Baptist. Nobody asks "of what" in such cases. What's your problem?

Joan of Arc is more properly Jeanne d'Arc. d'Arc was her family name (her father's name was Jacques d'Arc) and is French for "of the bow", meaning an ancestor of hers was a maker of bows (as in bows & arrows). The same occupation in medieval England would have given one the surname Archer or Bowman.
