The media obviously wanted to get back at him for converting to Islam. Salman Rushdie was obviously applauded by the West for deeming the Quran as the 'Satanic Verses'. Cat Stevens only said that Muslims should diplomatically and following the right procedures get the book banned and the next thing you know the media said he agreed with Iranian PM Khomeini's issuing a death warrant for Rushdie (that was hilarious!).
They just wanted to get him back for converting at the height of his career and the fact that he gave it up for Islam. They suceeded ion getting record stores and radio stations to ban his music- how sad.
I know there will be many people who don't have any time for Islam because of all the negative press but this was ourageous. I fefelt sorry for him. No one was happy for him because after researching all the religions for years he had finally found peace.

In 1989 his music was banned in America, Europe etc for what he said.
How is he fanatical? Because he grew a beard? Because he opened a school for Muslim kids? What has he done that is fanatical?

Just because he supported the fatwa doesn't mean he is fanatical and deserved to get his music banned. I support the fatwa and I was 5 at the time. I am not fanatical. If someone (especially a Muslim) said those things about the Quran I would spit on their face. Some people wouldn't understand that because they don't believe in anything as strongly as I do in my religion, that doesn't make me a fanatic beacuse I have unerring belief, try England football fans for that.

I always felt Cat Stevens got a shitty deal. Yes, he's converted to Islam, but that doesn't' mean he speaks for all Muslims any more than I speak for all SubGeni. I love Cat and he's done a lot of good with his money. Hell, he doesn't even touch the money that his music makes, it goes right to charities. Good for you, Mr. Stevens.

confident, he's an quite good singer and music author. He now is going via the call Yusuf islam. He has a sparkling CD out stated as An different Cup. His songwriting and singing is as good as ever. it particularly is astounding that his voice now sounds the comparable because it did 30 years in the past.

I like Cat Stevens and always have. His music has inspired many and is always a pleasure to listen to. His religion is his life and no-one has the right to interfere.

I've seen footage, at the time, of him at an anti-Rushdie demonstration, and was on record supporting the fatwa., regardless of what he now claims.

I didn't see it. but part of me got angry just from reading "Cat Stevens" in your question.
Anyone that is this fanatical about religion deserves to be made fun of and/or spurned. Just look at all the crap that Tom Cruise gets for being a scientologist. Wait a second, the media actually doesn't give him all that much flak over that. I guess the media don't think that Scientology is all that bad. Maybe because half of the media is Scientologist.
What's that you say? Scientology isn't a religion? Why not?

His peace is not peace for the rest of the world as the way the Koran is being interpreted is not how it was meant to be.
Like all converts he became more fanatical than born Muslims.
I will not be buying his new CD he will probably be trying to raise funds for the cause.
