So I need to change my name because I was recently married. I have to show all kinds of ID, which is a good thing for security, but how in the hell do they expect working people to go stand in ridiculous lines between the hours of 9 and 4 Monday through Friday only? What is the reason for this? A throwback from the 50s when few women worked? And they wonder why people don't want to get married! Arg! Sorry, this is probably just a rant, but if anyone can really explain these ridiculous hours, I would appreciate it. Thanks! J

By the way.... I have no more vacation time left. I can't take a day off to do this. I'm a teacher part time and an accountant part time. Both jobs really should be full time jobs so I can't afford to miss any more of either. So much for American productivity!

Also, quite a few of you are suggesting that I mail in an application. Didn't any of you have to provide proof of the marriage? Or is it that a more recent requirement? There's the option of mailing the proof of ID and marriage in, but..... well, call me paranoid, but I'm not about to trust TWO government institutions (Post Office and SS Office) with my ID AND my marriage license!

I totally agree. I just went with a friend who needed a replacement card. I couldn't believe the ridiculous hours they have. You think they would at least stay open late one day a week.

well you can thank our government for the ridiculous long lines. If they would secure our borders and keep the free loaders out, there would be no lines.
No throwback and just think every time you change you name or loose your card. You get to do it again.
The workers are there a longer time than 9-4 but in order to fill out all the paper work they must close at 4 or they would never get out of there.
The security you understood. What I get angry at is,why is it that because our government will not do anything to keep out the illegals, that we as citizens always have to suffer?
You should be able to walk into any Social Security office and in your case, simply show your old SS card and your marriage license and change your name.
Actually for a name change, they should allow you to do it on their web site. If you already have a SS card they don't need any thing else.
You could mail it in just send copies of your drivers license and marriage certificate with your application.

What do working women have to do with the operation hours of the social security office?. Government jobs tend to have great hours, benefits, and holidays. The long lines generally move rather quickly. Good luck on your name change. I assume you are taking your husband's last name? Now that practice is a throw back from the fifties.Have a great day.

Order the form on line and mail it to them.
You can also call them at 1-800-772-1213
Reply to additional comment. Send the mail certified or get the forms and drop them into the box at the office that is usually provided. Good luck!
By the way, if you get any letters in mail from companies claiming to change your name and you have to pay, do not do this. I got one like that after I was married and it was a scam. Luckily I knew about it and did not fall for it.

Don't know about the ridiculous hours but my experience was that the SS Office was NOTHING like the DMV when it came to standing in line. I live in Nashville and when I was married and had to report to SS Office to have my name changed I absolutely DREADED it. I got there at 10am, a full hour after they opened and had to wait.........5 minutes.

Don't mind the rant...everyone should once in a while. When I got married all you had to do was call and they would mail you a form. You filled it out, sent it in, and got a new card with your new name in the mail. Also when I had my kids it was just the matter of filling out a form at the hospital got their cards in the mail a few weeks latter...
The hours of operation reflect our government hard at work...you forgot to mention they do close for lunch daily...Ahhh the power of our tax dollars....

You do not need to chang your name, and if you want to you need to do with social security or it not really leagal. Credit cards, voting, Drivers livience, state ID, thay all make MRS. but untill you till you do it with social security the change of name does not matter, you are still MS. Miss or any other name you were. In America you can go by as many name as you want as long as you do not use fraud. If you SS# goes with your name you are fine.

Have you ever tried calling the offices. It is even worse.Your lucky if you even get the line to ring in, much less talk to an actual person. I called my caseworker and left messages for her to call back. Never has been over a year waiting.
