In grade school, we were taught that lying is bad, but we were also told 'If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.' When is it best to tell the truth? Are there ever circumstances where lying is the better choice for both parties involved?

I do my best to avoid lying but I still ocassionaly lie. I would think most people fall into this category. If they say they don't - they are liars! Haa haa

I was lied to extensively by a number of people growing up. Not just about things like the Easter Bunny and so forth, but lies that really hurt. One example was when my grandmother had a stroke years ago. An uncle of mine called looking for my mom and dad, and he told me everything was fine. But when I saw my mom and dad come home a few hours later when they were supposed to be away for the week, I knew something was up. My mom eventually told me the truth, but I couldn't trust that uncle for a long time afterward. The whole thing made me feel less than worthy, unincluded, and second class.
Bottom line? Tell the truth- even if it will upset the other party. People will respect you a lot more in the long run.

Some people argue that lying can be acceptable when telling the truth would cause unnecessary pain. For instance, there is no point in telling someone that you find him ugly in regular circumstances.

You should tell the truth always. Lying is deceitful. There is never a good time to lie even if it hurts someone feelings, once they come around, they will realize you were trying to help them.

Truth... is subjective. Moreover... it is relative. It is not a Lie... if your mind truly believes it.
