Nicky, you didn't say whether you are in elementary or middle school. I have a feeling you're a middle schooler. Without your being more specific, it's difficult to give you the kind of advice that could come from an actual one-on-one conversation about your learning and study habits.
There are materials out there on strategies for effective studying.
Search the web, check the library, or ask your teacher to help you.
One bit of advice I can give you is to break the material down into "chunks". Sometimes a lot of information seems overwhelming, and you don't know where to start. For example, you might make some note cards and group them according to content, such as dates, facts, people, etc.
You might also construct a "Who, What, When, Where, Why and How" graphic organizer.I've seen this done in many ways, including an outline of a hand, with a heading and facts on each finger and on the palm, as well. Try a two-column note taking system for Science, Geography, etc. Put the subject or topic in the left column; the pertinent facts you need to know in the second column.
Use a web organizer, with your topic in a big circle in the middle; your facts recorded in smaller circles radiating from the middle one.
Use a color-coding system that works for you, such as highlighters in different colors.
For reading material that you can write on or use for study guides, try text coding. Circle the main idea, underline supporting details, and box dates, names, and places of importance. Try to determine the main idea of each paragraph, and write it out in the margin - just a word or two. If it helps to draw a little picture or illustration, do it. Just a simple drawing may be very helpful to your particular learning style.
Try having a specific place and time to study, without distractions such as phone, t.v., computer, etc.
Before tests, get a good night's rest and eat a protein rich breakfast. Relax! Expect to do your best!
Good luck! You are to be commended for your willingness to improve your grades and study habits!
