i just made one in excel. it has an income and expense rows. everything we spend and everytign we make gets up into it, so we can see what we buy and how much we make. i have it set up so that it automatically does the math and gives me totals for each (income and expense), and then subtracts the two to see if we are in the red or black, and by how much. its cake to do.

I use a web application at http://www.expenseregister.com to log my expenses. It has some neat features like searching, graphs, etc and it is free.
