Republicans typically believe in smaller government with more control allotted to the states. They believe in promoting business and lower taxes. They favor less government spending (although you wouldn't know it given the current crop). They believe in self reliance and do not support large social programs.

Democrats favor more centralized control in the form of a larger federal government with less power to the states. They traditionally sponsor more social programs and do not believe in lower taxes.

These are generalized positions and do not properly reflect the parties, but are rather intended as an overview. If you want real information I suggest visiting their party websites and reviewing their platforms.

It was supposed to be that Republican's were for less government, more business, fiscal conservatives and a strong military. Democrats were for more of a social welfare state and the working man.

However- that's not what's been going on recently. Instead, the swingers are over things that have very little to do with the management of our country, and more to do passionate religious and moral issues such as Gay marriage and abortion. They've lead us down a road of tremendous national and foreign debt, and instead of using the fear of military reprisal, instead played our whole hand in front of the world and now our hands are handcuffed. The republicans are well organized at messaging (some would call it propaganda) - but the Iraq war and Katrina fiasco's have shown us all that the emperor has no clothes (i.e they claim to be good managers, but they aren't).

Not a whole lot, if I am to be honest with myself. They both use the same tactics to get elected, and members of both parties have been caught breaking the law. People like to point fingers at their opposing party, but really, they aren't that different.

The only real differences that I really know of is their typical stances on the issues. Republicans are generally on the conservative side, while Democrats prefer a more liberal approach. But there are variations of this on each side, and just because someone belongs to one of the parties, the way they are going to vote is not guaranteed.

Republicans adore and admire the wealthy and thing "things", are important. Democrats care about people and believe in helping those less fortunate than themselves.
Why am I reading so many answers above that say the Republicans are for less government help when over $7 billion has been lost in Iraq to republican owned businesses that haven't even done the jobs they were suppose to for reconstrucrtion of that country. Also this Republican government is spending money like drunken sailors to fill their friends pockets. This sure as heck isn't any type of rugged individualism that you hypocrits are writting about. It pure and simple republican greed!!!

The basic difference is not government control over your life but that Republicans say help your self and Democrats take a more we'll help you out stance..

Republicans answer threads like this one by bashing democrats, for one. Plus, republicans are more conservative and care more about the well-being of their homeland than that of the collective world. They also produced the brilliant George Bush! Sorry, no one was insulting the republicans, had to jump in there.

Republicans are willing to make tough sacrifices to keep gas in our cars and money in our pockets. They are two seperate parties that are not necessarily against eachother, which is why it is ok to fall somewhere in between the right and the left.

Democrats lean towards a government safety net for all people. Republicans lean towards more of a rugged individualist approach, and believe a smaller government will help in that cause.
