The major reason for all staining is to be able to see an object more clearly. Nigrosin, in particular, is used to stain bacteria that are negatively charged, because the nigrosin itself is negatively charged, and can stain these bacteria while other stains cannot.

nigrosin is an aniline dye having a special affinity for ganglion cells, used to stain tissues from the central nervous system for study under the microscope.

It may also be used as a counter-stain to promote contrast between the subject and the glass itself, especially with thin tissue sections.
