I need to choose a major at the college so that I can go on to get a teaching degree. I want to teach 3 & 4th graders. What major should I take as I am into everything creative, writing, arts, etc. What's going to be the most useful for me as a major?
History,
Art History
Comparative Literature
or
Sociology?
Thanks!

I'm sorry but I don't think any of the majors you listed will be helpful. If you can't major in education, then I would pick something general like psychology (which is what I had to do). None of the majors there are going to help with elementary education. And speaking from experience you may have those grade levels in mind, but once you get started it may change and/or whenever you get out of college you may not find an opening at that level. I would love 4th grade but the only thing I could find was kindergarten. You gotta take what you can get. If you really like everything creative try english that would be my next best bet. Good luck

You need to major in Elementary Education. The only way you can get a teaching certificate in NY is after you at least have a bachelor's, pass all your teaching exams, do student teaching, and then file for the certificate. After that, you need to get a masters degree in five years or you'll lose your license. Good luck.
