A water softener is the only option, and even then, might not work in the most extreme situations. There are some fixes, however, available on the internet. Start with Culligan.
Classically, people had cisterns to catch rain water for clothes washing. Some older homes still have these.

If you don't treat the hard water at the pump, then treat it in the washer...there are additives to the wash for iron removal...Try them with the whites.

try 1/4 cup baking soda in your wash - also allows you to cut down on soap

Have you used the Oxyclean Detergent? It works well for me, but i don't think i have hard water.

My mama used to use Blueing....I don't know if it is still around. You put in the rinse cycle.........if ya find it
