Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep stray cats and raccoons or opossums (or whatever else) out of the trash in my 6 foot wood fenced backyard?

You might try putting some moth balls in a sock, tying it up and attaching it the lids of the cans.

Of course, trying to get those little bitty things off a male moth can be rather tricky.:-)

Don't put chemicals or poison in your trash. The last thing we need is more chemicals in the garbage.

The best solution is to buy a trash can with a lid that will lock or hook shut. If you can't find that, you can probably rig your trash can to stay closed. This will keep most of the animals out of it.

I agree that lights will help a little with the nocturnal animals, but they might end up increasing your power bill without driving them off. Keeping your trash regularly emptied, keeping the area clean, and locking down your trash lid are all good ways to reduce pests.

Get a garbage can that has a cover the hooks shut. Or tey a motion light to scare them away.

either put a bungee strap on the lid or put something on top of the trash, such as amonia or bleach. They won't like it.
