How can I become published. I have written papers before, and I also write short stories. Academically, or for fiction novels, how would I go about getting published?

Pick up a copy of Writers Market and read what magazines and book publishers are looking for. Do your homework.

Write something all the way through to the end, proofread it, revise it, put it in the format that publisher wants. Write a cover letter telling them why this story or article is unique and why their readers might enjoy it.

Send it off and then get busy writing the next one. If you do it right, you should have a sale not long after you get the 12th short piece in the mail or the 12th novel to a publisher. I recommend doing short pieces first.

It all depends on whether you want to self-finance the publishing or approach a publisher. There are a few self-publishing options that are very popular, like www.lulu.com, or you could speak to your local colleges and universities. (many of them have a publishing department) If you want to approach a Publishing House, you will first need to determine which publishers publish for which genres. Once have found a list of publishers that publisher for your target market, you can give them a call. They will ask you to lay your manuscript out in the format they prefer, and ask you to post it to them along with a cover letter. (Don't forget to include an intellectual / creative copyright within your manuscript) And then you wait. It can take anywhere between 3 - 6 months before they contact you, but I would suggest phoning them 2 weeks after you have posted the manuscript just to confirm that they have received it. You should definitely approach a local publisher first. Bear in mind that getting your work published is hard work. You will, like almost all writers, be rejected by publishers, but don't give up. It will eventually happen.
