My parents always explain to me that college is like my job. This is not rare amongst students, and some of their parents even pay for EVERYTHING for them and even give them some spending money so that they can keep working at their "job".

I'm a senior now in college and I have been at both ends of the work and play spectrum. Usually it is a lot of play in the beginning, then a lot of work, then play again at the end. Usually in the extremes. What I have learned is that your social life in college is just as if not more important while you are in college as your classes. I'm not saying that keg stands are going to get you far in life, but your experiance in interacting with other people your age and adults will really come in handy in the future. For example, when I first came to college, I was really lacking in social skills and how to fit in. Then I started to meet more people and spend time with them and watch how they interacted with people. I learned the confidence that they had and began to mimick it. Now, when I get a job with a buisness, the first 30 seconds in my interview will show my confidence and I will show that I am a good person to be around.

Also, because of my involvement in organizations and stuff, I have found my calling in life and made bonds with people all over the world. You can't get that stuff in classes man. Now, failing out of all your classes isn't going to help you with your social life. You have to learn yourself the balance between being responsible about your studies and having fun. Don't stay stuck in your room studying all the time. Learn to get that stuff done during the week so you can go out on the weekends or at night.

Excellent answer from Brad. But it really depends on what you want to do in life. If you want to be, say, a Doctor, then the grades you get are vitally important. If you don't get top grades, you won't get into med school. But Brad makes a good point, that some lines of work involve using a lot of social skill, so being in different organizations, and taking charge of your time are very important.

You can stay home and have fun for free. College is expensive, even if you go to a state school - work has to come before play!

ps the person who fantasizes that she paid for her education is pretty clueless. In the USA at least, there is NO college which is not supported by Federal funds. At state schools the majority of the cost of the education is paid directly by taxes, and at private schools the schools receive large amounts of federal money in the form of grants, research funds, matching money, and student loans. Without that government (that is, taxpayer) money, no school in the USA could function.

Come of it! Too much work indeed. A Summer of Cricket and swanning around on the river, discussing Byron, and getting legless. The perils of Winter include getting muddy in the Rugby squad, running out of toasted buns in the Common Room, hiding the Glenfiddich from the freshmen, and choosing between brains or beauty for the Christmas revelry. Then its home to the family, a job in Tescos, and the world is your oyster. Good luck - stay with it, the fog will clear.

Too much work suggests lack of time management. You should make a plan of your time. Ie spend 4 days working 3 days playing. Uni doesn't have to be hard work, you just need to plan your time effectively.

I don't know where you lot go to uni but the tax payers didn't pay a penny towards my education. You chose to be there nobody forced you so stop moaning about the work load. I agree with the first answer, find a good balance between the two cos thats what you will have to do when you leave!

It's college, so that means LOTS of work! If that's not the reasong you're there, your wasting everyone's time (including yours) and taking up a slot from someone who might actually want to do the work.

This is an individual wishful thought, should you want to play, no one will stop you. Surely having gone this far in your education, one would want to cap it all with good results! It is you who should be mature to plan your work and of course, you usually leave room to flirt around.
