Is it worth paying extra for the new one, or should I go with the bargain bin choice?

Well there really is no wrong way to go.. If you want killer songs, lean towards GH1. But if you want awesome 2-player action, definetly get GH2.. Either way you go, you are gonna want both of them in the end. I can guarantee it...

Honestly, I would go with Guitar Hero 2. It's just better.

I like the 1st one better. In my opinion it has better songs. But.. That's just me.. The 2nd one has more options, but I still prefer the 1st. The 2nd one so far has been a let down... Also on the 2nd one, the people they have singing the vocals for the song aren't good and really don't sound like the original at all and it kinda kills the few songs on the game that i do like.

My friend has both of them and he told me that Guitar Hero 2 is better becuz it has better songs

the newer one has a lot of more stuff. i would get the new one.
