Is it okay to mix rice starch with infant formula? She is only 3 wks old but cannot keep down most formulas and just spits them up alot even from her nose. I started on breast milk but she is now on Enfamil AR Lipil with added rice starch to thicken in the stomach so it can then be digested. The pediatrician knows I have her on it but never expresses much opinion for anything. I reallllllly would much rather breast feed her but would it be okay to mix rice starch in the breast milk? Where could I find it? And would it be okay to just use "rice cereal" instead to mix? Or is she just too young? Only legitimate answers please. I live in a small town and don't know where to find a lactation consultant if one even exists here and probably couldn't pay the fees anyways. And to the lady who works at WIC and answers the Yahoo questions, your input, comments, or opinions would be appreciated but I noticed you have it set up to not receive emails or IMs. Thank you so much.

Breastmilk would be much easier on her tummy than formula. Is there a La Leche League group in your area? A LLL Leader would help you for FREE. You can also call the hospital where you delivered and find out if there is a Lactation Consultant there who will see you. Sometimes they also hold support groups at the hospital.

Feeding cereal too early is not a good idea unless the doc recommends it. Starting solids too early can put baby at risk for allergies, diabetes and obesity. There may be another answer to your problems.

You should talk to your pediatrician about your child possibly having acid reflux, my son had it and nothing worked except putting him on Enfamil Nutrimagin and also the Dr. prescribing him infants prevacid, and they both worked wonders. She sounds like she like she might have reflux, she will outgrow it. Good luck. Oh and she is too young for just the rice cereal by itself.

my 5 week old son is on prevacid for acid reflux and his doctor has me putting a teaspoon of rice cereal in his formula as well until the medicine starts to work so that he can keep some of it in his belly. and for the person that said that you need to breastfeed and not use formula, its not always possible to breastfeed, i did for 2 weeks but became very ill to were i became dehydrated and was not able to produce any milk, so there are mothers that have to give formula when we wish we could breastfeed .

Do not mix rice cereal with the milk. This could constipate her.
