Here's another (easier) way to do this:

0.5=1/2 or in simpler terms, it is taking something in half.

Half of 0.496 is 0.248 (take the numbers in sections: half of 4 is two and half of 96 is 48).

It's a sort of an abstract way to look at it but it makes it easier to see the numbers.

But since you want to estimate how much the number is, 0.496 is 0.004 away from 0.5, and taking half of 50 is 25, just put back the decimal.

You can round 0.496 up in the 1/10's place to 0.5 and then multiply it by another 0.5 which equals 0.25...

0.496 x 0.5 = 0.248

Estimated - - - 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25 which is 0.002 away from the actual number, which is very close...

If you round 0.496 to 0.5 then you can estimate.
0.5*0.5 = .025

This is fairly close to the actual answer, which is 0.248

.496 is close to .5 or 1/2
.5 is 1/2

1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4 or .25
