We rent, my landlord bought three herferd highlander pregnant cows. Horns fully intact. They share a pasture with my quarter horse. Is my horse in danger of being speared? Its a large pasture, same water tank, same feeding area. I cant seem to find anything about this topic when I google it.

Hereford Highlander...Is that a Hereford-Scotch highlander cross?Or is this some breed that I'm unaware of?Cuz that very well could be the case.Anyway though,if it is a cross between herefords and scotch highlanders, both breeds are,on average, pretty docile.I don't think you're horse is in any danger.

I'm wondering the same thing...Herford, Highland cross. Im not a cattle expert, but I haven't heard of a HerfordHighlander.

In any case. My dad use to raise polled Herfords..they are a pretty docile breed. (much more docile than the Black Angus and Chalois my grandpa raised) I had my horse in the same pasture with them, and they all got along good. My horse actually bonded with the cows and when we would seperate them, he would call for them. He was an only horse, so I think he liked the company and being part of a "herd"

Horses are kept with cattle all the time.. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Maybe just introduce them slowly if you can.

I have heard that some cows are aggressive when they have calves. But I have never heard of them being aggressive to another large animal, such as a horse. I don't think your horse should be in any more danger then he would be if he were in a pasture with a nipping pregnant mare. But then again I do not own Hereford Highlander Cows I own Brahmans.

I have heard of numerous problems pasturing horses & cattle togher. The horse frequently bites the daylights outta the cows and cases them through the fence. Never heard of the agresser being the cow.

Here is a website with info on breeds of catlle: http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/

I have known many people that have sucessfully pastured cattle & horses together. But I would ASK your landlord if he knows if these cows have been with horses before. If you are uncomfortable about it, let him know your concerns. Was the pasture yours per your rental agreement? If so, why is he putting his cattle in with your horse?

Unless your horse is either blind or stupid it should be fine. Quarter horses also have a slight herding instinct that was bred into them. It should be able to stay away from horns.

If I were you though I wouldnt like it either.
