1. YIM is a waste of time, get something more reliable such as MSN or AIM.
2. Closing all applications means to close anything else your computer may be running at the time. Games, Explorer, My computer, Calculator etc.
3. Click on the crosses or press Alt + F4 to close programs
4. Doing this will free up some RAM so that computing session, for running other applications but physically will NOT make your computer faster
5. No, the download will not speed up, this is determined by your connection speed and not your RAM, I suggest if you have enough resources upgrading to Broadband.

Running applications are windows that are open. Before starting the download close all the windows by pressing the X button on the top. Then you can download the messenger. If it still doesn't work that means your computer is old and the processing speed of your Internet and your computer is slow, and that's how you can download the messenger.
P.S. Get dsl that might be the problem too.

Close everything on the task bar down on the bottom there. Right click and close. Another and better way is to hold control. alt and delete to open the task manager and close everything BUT system files. DO NOT hit that delete accidental two times or your computer is going to restart. After you get your download restart the computer so all your stuff can reload. Also if you still have problems then download Yahoo Messenger as a saved file and install from there. Good luck!

All running applications would be anything you see in your windows taskbar.
To shut them down, close them all via the X button at the top right corner of each application, or by right clicking on the icon on the taskbar and choosing "close"
It may allow you to speed up your downloading if the programs that are running are taking excessive bandwidth and computer resources. It depends on the nature of the application.

It means all programs, before you install it you should not have any boxes on the bar at the bottom of the screen like you do say when you open explorer you have the page open but you also have a box pop up down the bottom make sure nothing is there

Close all non-important applications or browser windows, you do this to recoup resources (memory, processor cycles, etc...)
