if so how bad because i work in a building where they are fixing the roof with tar and the smell is coming in through the ventilation.

Yes, but you are just inhaling fumes not the liquid. Shut the vents or ask the boss to get you a mask. You should have the right to refuse to work because of health concerns. Call your local Labour office.

Close your vents. Anything like that is an irritant. Tell your boss. If that doesn't do anything and you can't leave the building while they are fixing the roof, go to the drug store and buy yourself a face mask. Not kidding. People use them for painting, around sick people and all kinds of fumes. They're cheap. Buy a couple. That way, if you get sick, your boss will know that it was the fumes and you can get workers comp!

it can build up in your lungs if you are exposed for long periods of time. take breaks every hour. tell your boss that you are going to be walking outside to get some FRESH air every hour.

jeez wear a gas mask..havent you heard about tar form cigarettes ..if its in the lungs, same principle.
